Oldeuboi remake
They are probably going to fuck up the remake of Oldeuboi (Oldboy).
Why does Hollywood even bother remaking the best South-Korean film? It worked for Mou Gaan Dou (Infernal Affairs) and its Hollywood remake The Departed. But The Departed was directed by Martin Scorsese and had Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon playing the lead characters. Also Mark Wahlberg delivered his best acting performance of his career in this film. Also I was quite surprised that Jack Nicholson didn't get nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He was bloody brilliant (no pun intended).
But for the remake of Oldeuboi they have Spike Lee as a director and the best actor for the remake is Samuel L. Jackson. Their next best actor is Josh Brolin so they have a nice big gap there. But even if they had a better cast, I doubt they can make it better than the original. Min-sik Choi, South-Korean's best male actor, playing the lead role in Oldeuboi was perfect.
I am also quite curious who came up with the idea of remaking Akira. When will these people learn that one does not simply better a masterpiece?

Masterpiece or no masterpiece, it is an irrelevant debate. This is an industry, and that is what drives decision processes. If something can be made to sell, ideally building on top of something without reinventing a wheel here or there, it will be done.
I know that Hollywood is all about making money. The amount of remakes they come up with is incredible and rarely works out.
Rip Death at a Funeral
(and many others).
They only remake movies in a dumped down version of the original so american people can understand its otherwise too complicated humor.

I agree that a remake is unnecessary, but Spike Lee is one of the very few directors who is probably able to take the original material and do something new with it. It won't be a shot by shot remake, I think (and hope) that he'll be able to put some other elements in there that will shift the focus of the plot.
But yeah, that's all just a way of justifying it, in the end I also think that the original is nearly perfect and does not warrant a remake (or re-imagining).
